The Temperament and Grooming of the Wheaten Terrier

One of the most interesting facts about wheaten terriers is that they are known for having hair rather than fur. This makes them very popular with people who have asthma or allergies simply because the hair causes fewer reactions than fur would.

The wheaten terrier is an alert and happy dog that gets along well with humans and other dogs. It is a great dog to have in a family with children as it loves to play and is very gentle with young children. It is a good guard dog that barks at the appearance of guests and is usually very well behaved. Owners need to instill good behavior in them from birth as their temperament can become one of aggressiveness if they do not have good training. They have the nature of a puppy that stays with them throughout their entire life, but if socialized and taught the rules of good behavior early on, they will respect other humans and animals throughout their life.

When wheaten terrier puppies are born, their coat is red, brown, mahogany, or white. Their hair grows out into a white color before turning cream colored, which is what color it stays into old age. Unlike other types of hair, the hair on this dog is similar to human hair that needs to be cut and trimmed repeatedly and doesn’t shed like other dogs. Regular trimming and cutting of the hair is necessary to keep the dog groomed and healthy.

Regular wheaten terrier grooming has the purpose of making the dog’s hair look natural. Brushing the hair can make it look soft and fuzzy which does not look natural so brushing their hair is not recommended. Instead, a comb is recommended. Daily combing with a medium tooth comb is the best way to keep the dog’s coat free of tangles and you should begin doing this from birth. Outside of combing, other necessary wheaten terrier grooming techniques include checking its eyes and ears thoroughly for infection or suspicious things. Every time you bathe the dog, clean its ears and eyes well. The frequency of bathing this dog is up to the owner; it can be done as often as necessary with wet or dry shampoo. This dog does not shed like other dogs, but they should be combed very thoroughly a few times a month to get rid of stray hair and make sure that their coat remains healthy.
